— ”এত বড় আস্পদ্দা..গাঁয়ে কি মানোষ নাই! আজ শালা অদেরই একদিন কি আমার একদিন..”
সন্ধ্যার মুখে কাজ থেকে ফিরে রাগে গজগজ করছিল হরেন। পরিশ্রমক্লান্ত ঘর্মাক্ত দেহকে শীতল করতে এসময়ই প্রতিদিন স্নান করার অভ্যাস তার। দিনের ভাত খেতে রাত হয়ে যায় প্রায় সব দিনই। বউটা তাই তাড়া লাগাচ্ছিল,
— ”যাও ডুব দিয়ে এসো। আমি ভাত বাড়ছি। তার বাদে যা হবার হবে..”
অন্নগ্রহণে প্রবৃত্তি ছিলনা হরেনের। স্নান সারতেও অনীহা। ঘরে ঢোকার আগেই সতুপিসির মুখে কিছুটা শুনে এসেছিল। ঘরে এসে বউয়ের মুখে যখন থেকে বিস্তারিত শুনেছে ঘটনাটা, তখন থেকেই চাপা ক্রোধে টগবগ করে ফুটছে হরেনের মন। এই অন্যায়ের বিচার করতেই হবে। ঘরের বউ বলে কথা ! চোলাই মদের বেআইনি কারবারে গাজন মাল দু-চার বিঘে জমি করে পাড়ার কেউকেটা হয়ে উঠেছে যেন ! উঠুক, হরেনের তাতে কিছু যায় আসেনা। কিন্তু তাই বলে ওর ব্যাটা কারো মাথা কিনে নেয়নি ! ঘরের বউ ঘাটে যাবে একা, আর সুযোগ বুঝে তার সঙ্গে মশকরা করতে চাইবে, খারাপ কথা বলবে..! এত আস্পর্ধা হয় কী করে?
কথাগুলো বউয়ের কাছ থেকে শোনামাত্র হরেনের আত্মসম্মানেও ঘা লেগেছে প্রচণ্ড। বছর দেড়েক বিয়ে হওয়া হলো। তখন থেকে দেখছে তো বউটাকে। গরিব ঘরের মেয়ে হলেও খুবই নম্র স্বভাবের। কারো মুখের উপর কিছু বলতে পারেনা। স্বামীর প্রতি অগাধ ভালোবাসা। পরপুরুষের সামনে সংকোচে জড়োসড়ো হয়ে থাকে। অসৎ হলে সতুপিসি যখন ঘাটে গেছিল, তখন অমন কান্নাকাটি করে সব তাকে বলতো না। চেপে যেত। ঘরে ঢোকার আগে, হরেনকে সতুপিসিই বলছিল সে সব কথা। বলছিল, তাকে ঘাটে আসতে দেখেই কেমন করে চুপিচুপি পালিয়ে ছিল গাজনের ব্যাটা মন্মথ।
বউয়ের এই হেনস্থার প্রতিকার না হলে হরেনের স্বামী হওয়ার মূল্যই বা থাকল কি ! তার পুরুষত্বের মর্যাদা ধুলোয় মিশবে! বউটার কাছে নিজের ওজনও একেবারেই হারিয়ে যাবে। রাগে গজগজ করতে করতে তাই তড়াক করে লাফিয়ে উঠল হরেন,
— “দাঁড়া আজকেই এর বিহিত করব। আমি যোগেন দাদার বাড়ি চললাম।”
যোগেন দাদা গাঁয়ের পাঁচজনের একজন। তার কথাতে অনেকেই ওঠবস করে এ গাঁয়ে। দশ-বারো মাইল দূরের থানা থেকে পুলিশ এলে তাকে একবার দর্শন না দিয়ে যায় না। শহরের ব্লকঅফিসের বাবুরাও গাঁয়ের নানা কাজের জন্য তার সাথে পরামর্শ করে। শত্রুরা মাঝে মাঝে নেশা-ভাঙের বদনাম দিলেও, ছোটখাটো নানা অপরাধের গ্রাম্য বিচারসভার মধ্যমণি থাকেন তিনিই। ভালো মতো জমির মালিক বলে নয়, আসলে একটা পারিবারিক ঐতিহ্য আছে তাদের। যোগেন দাসের বাপ-ঠাকুরদারাও এ গাঁয়ের সবচেয়ে শিক্ষিত লোক ছিল। একমাত্র যে প্রাইমারি স্কুলটা গ্রামে রয়েছে, তাও হয়েছিল তাঁর বাবার চেষ্টায়। এপাড়া-ওপাড়ায় কাঁচা পয়সার জোরে হালে কেউ কেউ বড়োলোক হয়ে উঠলেও, মানমর্যাদায় যোগেন দাসের উপরে ওঠার ক্ষমতা হয়নি কারো। তার মুখের উপর কথা বলার হিম্মত রাখে না গাঁয়ের উঠতি বয়সের মস্তান ছেলে ছোকরারাও।
হরেন যখন এক বুক প্রতিবাদের ক্ষোভ নিয়ে ঘর থেকে পথে নামল, তখন সন্ধ্যার অন্ধকার নেমেছে। অলিগলি চেনা পথ পেরিয়ে গাঁয়ের বড়ো রাস্তায় উঠে লালুর চায়ের দোকানে চোখ গেল তার। বেশিরভাগ সন্ধ্যায় যোগেনদা দোকানে এসে বসে। জোটে এপাড়া-ওপাড়ার মাথা মুরুব্বিরাও। সন্ধ্যার পরই গাঁয়ের এই একমাত্র চায়ের দোকানটা খেটেখাওয়া মানুষদের সমাগমেও জমজমাট হয়ে ওঠে। আজও তার ব্যতিক্রম হয়নি। যোগেনদা না থাকলেও দোকান বেশ কোলাহলমুখর হয়ে আছে। একটু দূর থেকেই যেসব কথা কানে এলো হরেনের, তাতে তার ক্রোধের আগুনে ঘি পড়ল। বুঝতে অসুবিধা হলনা, তার বউয়ের ব্যাপারটা শুধু ঘর বা পাড়ায় আর সীমাবদ্ধ নেই। ছড়িয়ে পড়েছে বেশ ভালোমতোই। পাড়ার মেয়েমানুষদের মাধ্যমেই সংক্রমিত হয়ে সংবাদটা লালুর চায়ের দোকান অব্দি পৌঁছে গেছে।
পেটে খিদের জ্বালা ছিলই, মনের জ্বালা এখন আরো অস্থির করে তুলল হরেনকে। যোগেনদা নেই সেটা বুঝে নিয়ে, লালুর চায়ের দোকানে আর গেল না হরেন। চাপা ক্রোধের জ্বলন্ত দৃষ্টি নিয়ে অন্ধকার পথ অতিক্রম করে সে সটান হাজির হল যোগেনদার বাড়িতে।
যোগেন দাসের ভরা সংসার। বৌদিমণি তার দুই ছেলেমেয়েকে সন্ধ্যাবেলায় পড়াতে বসিয়েছিল। উঁচু বারান্দার অন্য দিকটায় বড়ো মেয়ে, ঠাকুরমার পাশে বসে একমনে টিভি দেখছে। বারদরজা ডিঙিয়ে আঙিনা বেয়ে হরেনকে আসতে দেখে তেমন অবাক হল না বৌদিমণি। বলল,
— ‘হরেন? তোর কথাই তো হচ্ছিল এতক্ষণ। কি হয়েছে রে, তোর বউকে নিয়ে? তোদের পাড়ার হরু বলছিল তোর দাদাকে। তোর দাদা তো রেগে আগুন! বললে, ‘বিহিত করতে হবে। গ্রামের বউ বেটিদের নিয়ে এসব নষ্টামি সহ্য করা যাবে না। কিছু উঠতি বয়সের ছেলে-ছোকরার জন্যে গাঁয়ের পরিবেশ নষ্ট হচ্ছে।’
হরেনের উত্তেজনা বাড়ছিল। গাজনের ব্যাটার বড় আস্পর্ধা হয়েছে ! এই আস্পর্ধা এবার ভাঙবে। সে জানে না কার বউকে খারাপ কথা বলেছে। এবার টের পাবে বেটা। একবুক উত্তেজনা নিয়ে সে বৌদিমণিকে শুধাল,
— ‘দাদা কুথায় গ্যালো?’
বৌদি বলল, — ‘বেরিয়ে গেল তো হরুর সাথেই, চায়ের দোকানের ওদিকেই যাবে বোধায়..’
হরেন-এর ভেতরটা আন্দোলিত হচ্ছিল। সে কারো সাতে-পাঁচে থাকে না। বাইরের মেয়েমানুষের দিকে খারাপ দৃষ্টি নিয়ে তাকায়ও না কোনদিন। দিন আনে, দিন খায়। সেজন্যই মাথার ভেতর একরাশ ক্রোধ ক্রমেই শাখা-প্রশাখা ছড়িয়ে আচ্ছন্ন করে ফেলছিল চাপা স্বভাবের যুবকটিকে।
যোগেনদার বাড়ি থেকে বেরিয়ে আবার রাস্তায় নামল হরেন। অন্ধকার পথ ধরে আবার পৌঁছাল লালুর চায়ের দোকানে। লালুর কাছে শুনলো, যোগেনদা নাকি ওরই খোঁজ করছিল একটু আগে। হরেনের মেজাজটা জ্বলছিল এমনিতেই। সে আজ অন্যায়ের শিকার হয়েছে অসহায় বলেই। কিন্তু ক্ষোভের অন্ধকারে সুবিচারের আশার আলো এসে ওকে উৎসাহিত করে তুলছিল। উত্তেজনাটা বাড়ছিল তার তরতর করে। সে নিশ্চয়ই বিচার পাবে। ভালো মানুষ বউটার সম্মানহানির প্রতিকার হবে। যোগেন দাদাই করবে সুবিচার। কিন্তু যোগেনদা কোথায়? অস্থির হরেন শেষপর্যন্ত ঘরের দিকেই পা বাড়ালো। বউটাও সেই সন্ধ্যা থেকে ঘরে একলা আছে। ফিরে গিয়ে বরং আবার আসবে এদিকে।
ছোট্ট পাঁচিলঘেরা ঘরের নিচু দরজায় গুঁড়ি মেরে ঢুকতে গিয়ে থমকে দাঁড়ালো হরেন। ভেতরে যেন কোনো পুরুষ মানুষের গলা শোনা যাচ্ছে।
— ‘বলো না.. কি বলছিলো তোমাকে, গাজনের ব্যাটা মন্মথ ? আমাকে বলতে লজ্জা কীসের!’
এবার বউয়ের গলা শোনা গেল, — ‘খারাপ কতা, আমি বলতে পারবোনি।’
— ‘দূর বোকা মেয়ে..লজ্জা করলেই লজ্জা ! তোমার স্বামী তো নেই। কী খারাপ কথা বলো না..’
বউটা বলল, –‘আমার সোয়ামিকেই শুধুবেন..’
— ‘দেখতেই তো শুধু সুন্দরী নও তুমি! তোমার জেদও তো বেশ আছে।’
হরেন আর অপেক্ষা করল না। ঘরের বারদরজা গলে ভেতরে ঢুকলো। দেখলো, ছোট্ট দাওয়ার এক কোনায় বউটা সিঁটিয়ে বসে আছে। দাওয়ার মাঝখানে মোড়ার উপর বসে আছে যোগেনদা। টিমটিমে লন্ঠনের আলোটা মাঝে জ্বলছে। সেই আলো বউটার শরীরের অনাবৃত অংশে গিয়ে পড়েছে। আর সেই দিকে লোভাতুর দৃষ্টি নিয়ে তাকিয়ে আছে যোগেনদা। লন্ঠনের আলোয় তার চোখ দুটো বিষাক্ত সাপের চোখের মতো জ্বলছে। মন্মথ যখন তার বউকে ঘাটে খারাপ কথা বলে, তখন তার চোখের নজর কেমন ছিল হরেন দেখেনি। কিন্তু যোগানদার এই চাহনিকে আরো বেশি ভয়ঙ্কর মনে হল হরেনের। সে সটান বারান্দায় উঠে গামছাটা নিয়ে বউকে বলল,
— ‘ভাত বাড়্ বউ..আমি ডুব দিতে যাচ্ছি।’
হরেনের গলা পেয়ে চমকে উঠে শশব্যস্ত হয়ে পড়ল যোগেনদা। হরেন তাকে কিছু বলার সুযোগ না দিয়েই বারদরজামুখী হল। বেরোনোর সময় হেঁকে বলল,
— ‘আমি যতক্ষণ না ফিরছি, একটু সাবধানে থাকিস বউ.. গাজন মালের একটা ব্যাটা লয়, অনেক ব্যাটা..’
